Wonderful Travel Router – A Must Have
A must have I would say if you are traveling, even if you work from coffee shop.Pros from my point of view:1. WiFi 6 for a reasonable cost. What kind of internet bandwidth you connect to will matter, but if you connect to a decent bandwidth speeds, this will transmit good network speed.2. Powers from USB-A or USB-C from my Macbook Pro (I used both USB-A to USB-C and USB-C to USB-C cables). This router has USB-C to power it up.3. It can connect from Wired, Wirless (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz), Cell Modem and Tethering. I tried Wired and Wirelsess and it worked flawlessly.4. It can transmit in both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz and has Guest Network also. Just in case you need to share your network with somebody, you do not need to give your main network’s password.5. It has both VPN Client (to route your traffic via VPN Service) and VPN Server (to access your network from remote location). I am using only VPN Client functionality. With SurfShark it works great.6. I set up VPN Client. When it is turned off and it turned back on, it boots up with VPN, which is great. It has got quite a few modes under VPN Client. The entire traffic goes via VPN, or you can choose based on the target locations, or Client Device. I am using for the entire traffic as I pretty much use this only when I am away from home.7. As this has OpenWRT, it has lot of plugins and Advanced features that you normally wont see in a router this size and price.8. This has got Dynamic DNS functionality, just in case you do not have static IP and wanted to use VPN Server functionality in this router. I am not using this feature.9. You can connect Hard Drive with USB-A to this router and it can work as a Network Storage.10. It has got lot of other features that I do not use. Ex: AdGuard, Good Cloud etc.11. I tested this with my power bank that I charge my phones with while traveling. And it works great!12. This comes with a power supply and adapters to them that work in US, Asia and UK. But I probably stick with using from my laptop’s USB slot to power it.Cons:1. This is pretty much with any networking device. You need a decent networking knowledge to set the VPN.2. The VPN Client did not work right out of the box. I had to upgrade the firmware and also go into Advanced features to upgrade all the OpenWRT modules.Overall I am very satisfied with this product. I would surely recommend this to anybody.

Small but powerful, a must for travelers
The GL.iNet GL-MT3000 (Beryl AX) has quickly become essential to my travel kit. This pocket-sized Wi-Fi 6 wireless travel router packs an impressive array of features into a compact design, making it perfect for staying connected on the go. Despite its small size, the Beryl AX offers robust performance, delivering fast and reliable internet access whether I’m in a hotel, airport, or any other location with spotty Wi-Fi.I love that it supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of devices. The setup is straightforward, and the interface is user-friendly, allowing me to configure and secure my network quickly. The router also supports OpenVPN and WireGuard, providing an extra layer of security, which is a must when using public Wi-Fi.One of the standout features is its multi-gigabit Ethernet port, which is perfect for creating a reliable wired connection when needed. Another big plus is the ability to share a VPN connection across all my devices with minimal effort. The USB-C powered GL-MT3000’s compact size means it fits easily into my bag or even a pocket, making it incredibly convenient for travel. Overall, it’s a powerful and versatile travel router that I highly recommend.

Reliable, simple, portable dedicated router
The biggest advantage of traveling with a portable router is having all my friends/family devices simply autoconnect to the saved Wifi network and then joining the router to whatever establishment we might be at. If you have a lot of non-tech folks with you and don’t want to keep joining devices individually, this saves a lot of trouble. It has a small network footprint as well: it manifests as a single device and multiplexes that connection to several. It’s powered by a simple USB-C connection so it could be powered from the wall, an Anker battery, or even your laptop. While some Pixel phones with 2×2 repeater support can do this too, once that phone leaves the room or runs out of battery, everyone’s disconnected. This device is running a nice web UI on top of OpenWRT that gives you full blown router features. I’ve run this without issue in a cafe, a hotel, the airport, an airplane and none of my party had to bother me about what the local Wifi password was or entering their account info or room number, etc. Also supports VPN and Adguard which I haven’t tried yet.Two issues: First, I did run into 1 hotel that used EAP which Beryl doesn’t support (but Slate AX does). In that case, a CAT5 network cable to the WAN solved the issue, though I hear cloning MAC addresses does this too but I couldn’t get that to work. Second, there weren’t clear instructions on how to connect to a network with a captive portal but you can find examples of this on YouTube if you search with those terms. But, bottom line, I’m never traveling anywhere without this thing.

Excellent for wireless VR (virtual reality); Wish it had one more ethernet port.
I have this hooked up to my PC as a dedicated router for use with a Quest 3, running Virtual Desktop on the PC to stream to the Quest 3 using AV1 codec. The quality of the image in this setup is outstanding.Place the router in visual range of where the headset will be used to achieve low latency and a very comfortable VR experience. In some cases you may be able to even use this through a wall (it depends if your wall is wood VS. cinder block. However, the best experiences I’ve had in terms of smoooooth VR is when you make sure the router is literally less than 15 feet away, and, in direct line-of-sight of the headset at all times: No monitors, desks, etc blocking the visual range of the headset “seeing” the router. If you can set it up like this, you will love the performance you get out of it.I really like how small it is. Most routers area so big and bulky, and I didn’t want one of those sitting around on top of my PC. This is such a small, cute little appliance, it just does not get in that way, thankfully. Also, it hardly gets hot at all – and I know a lot of other routers the opposite is true!Highly recommended for VR.My only caveat: I wish it had one extra ethernet port on it. I actually don’t need it 95% of the time, but I wish it had it because there are a few times now and then that it would be convenient to plug another device into the network temporarily. As it stands, this model only has the ethernet port from your PC to the router, and then the LAN port out to The Internet and/or your other home router. Any other clients must connect wirelessly. This isn’t a deal-breaker due to my use-case dedicated to VR; It would just be a nice-to-have. I know the same company has another router with an extra ethernet port, but I read that one also gets a little hotter, hence my reasoning for going with this one.

This is my second one, its really great.
I have been using one of these since it first came out and its a great product. Small, lightweight and it does exactly what it says. Its simple to set up and works really well.I use it in repeater mode in hotels mostly, but have used it as “the” router when my main one went out, and I took my time replacing it. You arent going to get the range you would with a full size router but its not intended to be a whole house system, regardless I have never had range issues. The main perk for me is, all you have to do is power up the router, connect to hotel wifi and all your devices just grab the signal and you are good to go, no logging one device in after another. There is very little loss of speed in repeater mode, I stayed somewhere for a month and the dl speed without the router was average 580 mbs, with the router I averaged about 550 mbs. I was in Asia on this trip and the multiple plugs clipping into the power supply make it simple to use regardless of where you are.I prefer to run my vpn on my devices rather than on the router but if you dont, its a fast easy setup you do once. Mileage may vary on the dl speed that way but if you use wireguard protocol its going to be faster. They are running a modified version of OpenWrt software, its really well done and very easy to use.I picked this second one up for a friend who has traveling a lot and hes wondering why he didnt get one sooner.I had a small issue with the my first purchase and the support service from GL.iNet was some of the best I have had in years. They take about 24 hours to get back to you, but they are really helpful and dont make you jump through hoops. I was VERY impressed, (most companies are absolute crap) these folks are excellent. They won me as a long-term customer after that experience. Next time I need a full size router they will be my go to.

Great Travel Router – CRUISERS MUST HAVE
I travel and cruise often. I am an attorney and usually have to work for some portion of my travel, and having internet availability is crucial. I am also creating video content for a youtube channel and my work. When I am working I usually need to have more than one electronic device hooked up at the same time. For cruisers we all know that you pay per device so I am usually switching between devices, and that gets tiring.I have used several different travel routers (like ravPower and TP-Link) to different levels of success. However, the common factor is that the travel router usually deminishes the signal and speed coming in (and going out) so that even if I hooked up one device the connection speed would drop by more than half. For cruising that meant deathly slow connections.RavPower made me so frustrated on my last cruise by shutting off and on and disconnecting and reconnecting constantly. I simply couldn’t use it. TP-Link works better, but its effectiveness decreases significantly (in speed) when there is a distance between the modem and where I am working, making it useless at times.I bought the MT3000-Beryl AX because I had an upcoming cruise and had to work a lot, including having a Zoom hearing. I tested it at home and it was amazing, but the home doesn’t pose the connection issues found on a cruise ship. I boarded Royal Caribbean’s Oasis that uses Starlink (the same ship I used the RavPower on three weeks earlier and about pulled my hair out), hoping it would do well. This little modem was amazing. Not only did it connect easily to the ship, the download signal was the same as if my electronic device was connected directly. Additionally, the upload speed (not sure how) was almost always better than my phone or laptop. I speed-tested it regularly and often. It was as good or better than my direct connection, and everything worked great. I lowered the resolution on my camera for my zoom hearing and had no issues. I worked in my room, but I could hook the Beryl up to a batter pack and basically be mobile anywhere on the ship. I hooked up 4 devices at once and didn’t notice much of a lag for what I was doing. The modem comes with a bunch of built-in security features. For a family going on a cruise, this little device will allow you to provide access to all your cabinmates while they are in the cabin. It might solve the issue of needing to get everyone their own internet access (if some people only use the internet on occasion – but not for heavy scrollers). The only gripe I had was that I wanted to wirelessly dump photos from my iPhone to a card because I have limited storage (and your iPhone doesn’t want to back up to iCloud while on the ship even if you have continuous internet access). I know it can do this. I didn’t figure out how to do this when I was home and tried to figure it out while on the ship, but there wasn’t any real information, even the info Beryl provided (although I might have missed it). I had all the hardware. I tinkered with it but couldn’t figure it out. I tried youtube videos or google searches to no avail. I’m sure there is info out there, but it wasn’t easy to find.I give this a 5 Star rating as a travel router. Fast, efficient, secure, and portable! It’s a winner!

Great performer for the price and full of features
I bought this to go on vacation in South America to be able to connect to my own VPN at home as well as the Mullvad system and didn’t expect it to do much else. I was pleasantly surprised, especially getting it for $80 on warehouse deals. Definitely even worth the full price to be honest. The performance is out of this world for something of its size, WiFi coverage is great with both bands even in a concrete structure, the switchable LAN/WAN port is very nice so you don’t just have a wasted Ethernet port if using wireless or cell WAN.Setup is easy with guides on how to do most common tasks either self explained in the setup or easily available in the (online) manual. Anyone with some technical knowledge will fly through it, novice users won’t have a hard time learning.Importing VPN configurations was easy, I just exported a file from my main pfSense router and downloaded some from Mullvad, imported using web interface and away it went! Speed is great for a tiny device easily achieving gigabit over OpenVPN if your connection is strong enough and encryption is configured correctly. It comes with an international AC adapter which is handy and has a tiny cooling fan that only kicks on when you’re pushing it really hard with multiple users on VPN mode, only gets warm to the touch. And an added bonus, my girlfriend thinks the color and antennas are cute XD

Fast little router for cell gateway
I use this as a wireless WAN connection to my T-Mobile gateway. The best location for my gateway was nowhere near a wired connection to my home router. I put this router near my home router and connected it wireless to my gateway and wired to my router. The wired connection on the T-Mobile gateway cut the speed up and down in half. This connection is better than the wired even at these distances. My download speed at the gateway is 600-900 mbps down and 30-40 mbps down. With this connected to my home router the speed fell to about 500 mbps max with it on a lower floor and about 50 ft away. Pretty impressive actually. The latency was unaffected. To achieve this speed only a 5GHz connection is used with channels not shared by my home router. The fan has yet to run with the operating temperature at 62C.I use the DNS capabilities of this product to service the home router as well. It offloads the home router a bit and has a better caching strategy. It also selects between more DNS servers.I did find the wired wan connection switched to lan mode was slow at about 100 mbps.I have a scheduled reboot on this every few days to avoid freezing it. I also reboot the gateway about 30 minutes before this device to maintain stability. All in all I am very pleased.

Good option for hotels though heavier than expected
While traveling there are times where it is convenient for your WiFi connected devices to sit behind a router. Perhaps because you have a device that is difficult to put behind a captive portal or maybe you want a firewall in place where your trust of the public / hotel WiFi is an issue.GL.iNet offers a number of small router solutions which in theory address the requirements cited above, but the lower end solutions are 2.4 GHz only. And if the intent is to relay traffic from a hotel WiFi network to devices in your room, putting your “local” WiFi network on 5.6 GHz prevents struggling to find an open 2.4 GHz channel. This GL.iNet product supports dual band (2.4 / 5.6 GHz) operation thus allowing the 2.4 GHz radio to talk to the hotel WiFI network, while the 5.6 GHz radio can support local devices in your hotel room.In addition the router provides a firewall function to further isolate your devices for cyber security reasons, from the public hotel network. The router had far more capability including the ability to add applications or in fact utilize a VPN likely from a third party (e.g. subscription service). It is likely that the router’s capabilities will exceed most user’s needs.Overall I believe this product is a good solution, though the router is a little heavy and requires several amps of current via a USB-C connector. Notable is that this connect is USB-C power delivery, thus any power delivery supply works, including an Apple supply. That said the manufacture provides a power supply with the router and it is not very heavy, though it add to the overall volume if packing is an issue while on travel.
